Why Braces?

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics (esthetics). The other major benefit of orthodontic care is improving your bite (function). Our overall goal is to create Dentofacial Harmony. Simply put, creating beautiful smiles, bites and beautiful faces. You may be surprised to learn that orthodontics can improve your profile, lip support and overall facial beauty. Adult patients (age 18-65) may also wish to discuss adjunctive therapy for the overlying soft tissues of the face to temporarily smooth away wrinkles with the use of  Botox and/or dermal fillers (Juvederm).

After treatment is complete, many patients report increased self-esteem and self-confidence. Orthodontics is truly amazing!

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic (teeth) and dentofacial orthopedic (skeletal) appliances place force on teeth and bone in carefully controlled directions. The result is the movement of your teeth and jaws into better alignment. Appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic. They may be fixed (temporarily glued to your teeth) or removable.

Braces are the most common fixed appliance orthodontists utilize. Braces consist of brackets and bands that are bonded or cemented to your teeth. The real magic occurs when high-tech superelastic orthodontic wires are placed in the braces. The wires gently apply force to the teeth that causes the desired straightening of the teeth.

Invisalign is another appliance system that is very popular as it allows straightening of your teeth with a series of almost invisible plastic aligners. Check out invisalign.com for the latest on this high-tech system.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years. Each patient presents a unique set of dental/skeletal problems. Dr. Bonner will develop your treatment plan to correct your problems. More complex cases usually take longer to treat while less complex cases usually finish more quickly. Patient cooperation is a critical factor in the final orthodontic results achieved. Dr. Bonner and his staff act as coaches and cheerleaders to help our patients achieve the best results possible.
